Medium: Pastel
Base: Paper
Year: 2010
This is the fifth and last of a set of pastels. This work is on pale blue pastel paper, derived from photographs taken by Janice Mills on the shoreline along the ocean near Flinders and Cape Schanck Victoria, Australia. Due to popular demand and entering a lot of exhibitions this year the photos taken have, as I predicted, fostered a new set of seascapes, of which this is the last.
This pastel painting is also taken from a larger photo which has been cropped for dramatic effect in Photoshop and the colours enhanced. The sky has been altered, adding clouds in tones of grey with touches of mauve, orange and light yellow to give the impression of an approaching sunset.
This scene was also little more complicated because of the amount of rocks with a wave about to crash over them which has a large trough in front of it creating a sense of drama.
Light jade greens blend into the light blues in the water and there is a lot of movement in the wave and the water running over the rocky shelf in the bottom of the work.
I have tried not to overwork the pastels and have attempted to keep the spray of the water looking fresh and immediate. This work, even with the complications in the rocks and added lighting from my imagination was a very enjoyable piece to paint and has already attracted some positive feedback.
